Why EFL?
English is the international language of business and communication, especially on the Internet. More than 80 per cent of international companies use the language to communicate and it is estimated that three quarters of the world’s email is in English.
Why teach?
Given the current and future demand for English learning worldwide, teaching offers stable work for travellers and world explorers.
Any tourist can get on a plane and visit a country but as an english language teacher, you will be able to experience the country. You will access the country’s culture through your students in a unique way and you will be able to contribute to the development of the country in which you teach.
But ELT is much more than a means to fund your travels. It offers an exciting and flexible career with plenty of opportunities for advancement, development and branching out into related professions.
Where can I teach?
Teachers are needed everywhere where English is learned. English is the most popular modern language studied worldwide and many countries that already have English in their secondary schools and universities have also been introducing the language into their primary schools.
If incomes in a country are high enough, there will be a private sector with language schools offering English to those who can afford it. Schools will offer lessons or courses at all levels covering all kinds of English which might be demanded. English courses for young learners and business English are popular in countries whose economies are expanding or thriving and there might even be demand for English for Special Purposes from learners who want to apply their English in a specific context such as computing, law, journalism, or aviation.
Many companies looking to enter international markets need to supply English language training to their employees. They either send employees to a private language school or hire in-house trainers.
In some developing countries, incomes are not high enough to support private language schools. Salaries for public sector teachers tend to be much lower than in more developed countries but many of these developing countries have relationships and educational programmes which place overseas teachers in public sector positions. Incomes are often supplemented and such positions offer overseas teachers the opportunity to pick up valuable experience and make a wider contribution to local communities.
